Antioxidant activity of Camellia sinensis leaves

All beneficial effects of tea have been attributed to the strong anti-oxidative activity due to phenolic compounds catechins which protect the body from damage caused by free radical-induced oxidative stress (Jang et al., 2007). Carotenoids, flavonoids, cinnamic acids, benzoic acids, folic acid, ascorbic acid, tocopherols, tocotrienols are some of the antioxidants produced by the plant for thei...

Isolation of An Aroma Precursor of Benzaldehyde from Tea Leaves (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis cv. Yabukita).

The cyanoglycoside, prunasin, was isolated for the first time as an aroma precursor of benzaldehyde from fresh tea leaves (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis cv. Yabukita). Prunasin was readily hydrolyzed by a crude enzyme prepared from the fresh tea leaves to liberate benzaldehyde. The isomerization of prunasin under neutral conditions was also recognized.

Expression of caffeine biosynthesis genes in tea (Camellia sinensis).

Using semi-quantitative reverse transcription-PCR, we studied the expression of genes encoding caffeine synthase (TCS1), inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase (TIDH), S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthase (sAMS), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and alpha-tubulin (Tua1) in young and mature leaves, stems and roots of 4-month-old tea seedlings and young and old tea tissue cultures. The amounts of tr...

In-vitro Anti-obesity Assay of Alcoholic and Aqueous Extracts of Camellia Sinensis Leaves

Obesity is one of the main public health problems in developed countries. It is considered to be a risk factor associated with the genesis or development of major chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Many botanicals may provide safe, natural, and cost-effective alternatives to synthetic drugs. The results of this study show promise for the potential use of t...

Study on the antioxidant activity of tea flowers (Camellia sinensis).

Major chemical compounds in different extracts from tea flowers (Camellia sinensis) were analyzed. Distilled water or 70% ethanol extracts were then fractionated with chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol, respectively. Each extract fraction was tested its scavenging activities on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl free radicals. The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction o...
